What wing foiling is

Wing foiling combines a handheld inflatable wing, a board, and a hydrofoil. The wing gives you propulsion (like a sail), the foil lifts the board above the water, and you fly silently above the surface at speeds of 15-30 mph.

Why it's exploded

Lower wind requirement than kiting (10 knots is enough), much smaller gear (fits in a car boot), no lines or kite-launch space needed, and silent flight above the water. It hits a different aesthetic - more like sailing or surfing than airborne sports.

Who's switching to it

Lots of ex-windsurfers, kitesurfers wanting a calmer fitness option, surfers wanting to ride flat days, and people in their 40s-60s who find kitesurfing physically demanding.

The learning curve in numbers

Hours 1-3: standing on the board with the wing. Hours 4-8: first glides and short flights. Hours 8-15: consistent foiling and basic turns. Hours 15+: tacks, gybes, and small jumps. Faster progression than kitesurfing.

Best places to learn

Anywhere with flat water and 12-18 knots: Tarifa, El Gouna, Punta Trettu, Kalpitiya, Maui. Schools that teach kitesurfing are increasingly running wing lessons - check before booking.
