How long does it take?

Most adults need 10-15 hours of supervised lessons before they can ride independently. Some get there in a week, others take a season. Wind quality and the school's progression system matter more than your athletic ability.

Finding a good school

Look for IKO or VDWS certified instructors, a clear curriculum, low student-to-teacher ratios (3:1 or fewer), and proper safety equipment (helmets, vests provided). Read recent reviews on Facebook groups specifically for kitesurfing.

Booking your first lessons

Most schools sell 10-hour beginner packages for £400-700 depending on location. That gets you from zero to riding in most cases. Cheaper hourly rates can be a false economy.

Beach work before water

Your first 2-3 hours will be flying a trainer kite on the beach. This is essential, not filler. Trust the process; trying to skip ahead to water work without solid kite skills is the fastest route to giving up.

What to expect from yourself

You will swallow water. You will lose your board. You will end the day exhausted. By lesson 8 or 9 most students have a moment where they're riding upwind on their own and it clicks. That moment is why everyone keeps coming back.
