Waist harness - the standard

Most kitesurfers ride a waist harness. They allow free body movement, easy reach for unhooked tricks later on, and can be hard-shell (better support) or soft (lighter, less protective).

Seat harness - for beginners

Many schools start beginners on seat harnesses because they keep the chicken loop lower and prevent it riding up. The downside is restricted hip movement once you're more advanced.

Hook vs slider bar

A standard hook harness is the default. Slider bars (like Mystic's Stealth) allow the chicken loop to move side-to-side as you change direction - more comfortable for wave riding and unhooked tricks.

Sizing it right

Harnesses should sit on the hips when locked down, not ride up under the ribs. Try several brands - everyone's hips are shaped differently and what works for your friend may not for you.

Brands worth looking at

Mystic Majestic and Stealth, Ride Engine, ION, Manera, Cabrinha. Expect to pay £150-300 for a quality harness that lasts 3+ seasons.
