Windy vs Windfinder vs Predictwind - Which to Trust
The three apps every kitesurfer uses. Which one actually predicts your spot's wind most reliably?
Every kitesurfer has the same three apps on their phone: Windy, Windfinder, Predictwind. Each says slightly different things. Which one should you actually trust?
Windy
The map-based visual interface that lets you see wind patterns across whole regions. Strengths: multiple weather models you can compare (GFS, ECMWF, ICON), beautiful UI, free. Weaknesses: spot-specific accuracy isn't always the best, the visual layer can hide spot-specific quirks.
Windfinder
The classic spot-specific table format. Strengths: long-established kite spots have curated forecasts, easy to read, free at basic tier. Weaknesses: model selection limited on free tier, less flexible than Windy.
Predictwind
The sailor's app, increasingly used by kitesurfers. Strengths: multiple models including PWE and PWG, very detailed routing, paid models are accurate. Weaknesses: paid for full feature set, more complex interface, overkill for casual users.
What actually works
Cross-reference all three on the day before a trip. If they all agree within 2-3 knots, the forecast is trustworthy. If they diverge, treat the average as a planning estimate and stay flexible. The single most reliable forecast model in my experience is ECMWF.
Local knowledge beats any app
Every kite destination has a local Facebook group or WhatsApp group where the regulars post real-time wind reports. Join them. A forecast says 18 knots; the WhatsApp group says "feels nuked, 26 knots+" and that's the truth. Trust riders over models.
